What is Pono Music, and the PonoPlayer?

Before I continue, let me say now that even though this isn’t really related to gaming, I decided that it’s time for more than just gaming news. Hello, ‘Other’ category!

Remember, back in the day, when the OUYA became the biggest KickStarter in history? It brought in $8,596,474 and then was a HUGE success. When it released, however, the fans didn’t enjoy it that much. It seems that a similar thing is happening with a newcomer. Only, this time, it is definitely bigger and for a different purpose as well:  music.

The PonoPlayer is a music player that can play ”Pono Music”. This means that it can play the next level of quality music.

The PonoMusic.com Store uses FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) audio format as its standard, for compatibility, although the PonoPlayer can play most popular high-res music formats from other sources. PonoMusic has a quality spectrum, ranging from really good to really great, depending on the quality of the available master recordings:

  • CD lossless quality recordings: 1411 kbps (44.1 kHz/16 bit) FLAC files
  • High-resolution recordings: 2304 kbps (48 kHz/24 bit) FLAC files
  • Higher-resolution recordings: 4608 kbps (96 kHz/24 bit) FLAC files
  • Ultra-high resolution recordings: 9216 kbps (192 kHz/24 bit) FLAC files

Clearly, this shows that music will become much clearer and sound a lot better, right? I’ve heard 320 Kbps music, and it sounds amazing already. Imagine 28.8 times more Kbps. The possibilities…

Wait a second, doesn’t this sound familiar? The OUYA had incredible specs at the time of KickStarter, and confirmed titles coming to it. When it released, not only was it underpowered, but some ”confirmed titles” never released. Could the PonoPlayer have the same fate? Not exactly.

The PonoPlayer

Even though player was built to power and play PonoMusic, it gets the most out of any digital file, thanks to our partnership with the engineering team at Ayre Acoustics that custom-designed a digital filter, used zero-feedback circuitry, and chose a great sounding DAC, to make every PonoPlayer listening experience as magical and deep as possible. Smartphones skimp on these components, because with mp3s, it doesn’t matter so much.

The PonoPlayer adds no distortion or distance, nor removes any subtlety.  It doesn’t do anything to the music, except play it, perfectly, in all its original richness and glory.

Of course, the PonoPlayer sounds best with PonoMusic.  You “hear the light” – the perfect clarity of the highest quality music – then you see it: the blue PonoRevealer light comes on whenever a PonoMusic digital file is playing, and you’ll see, and hear, that it is the best it can be.

This PonoMusic.com website will work perfectly with only the PonoPlayer, which uses the extremely high ‘Kbps’ in music to sound as good as possible.

Pono even made what is called the ”Pono Promise”:

It’s simple yet profound. The Pono promise is to offer you the highest quality digital music albums or songs in the world – at PonoMusic.com.  This is the start, the source, of a listening experience unlike any other – powerful, emotional, satisfying. And, we’ve built a portable music player unlike any other in the world to enjoy this music wherever it takes you. But PonoMusic is more than just a high-resolution music store and music player. Pono is a grassroots movement whose mission is to bring back the soul of music, which has been left behind in the evolution of convenience.   PonoMusic digital albums capture all the feeling, spirit, and emotion that the artists put in their original studio recordings – nothing more, and certainly nothing less.

To make this possible we’ve created an entirely new end-to-end experience, and an “ecosystem” to allow you to effortlessly manage this new world of music quality.  We’ve sourced the studio master quality (digital) recordings – and we have also designed the portable PonoPlayer with a “no compromises” approach to bring that original recording back to life, untouched by the heavy hand of compression. Close your eyes and it feels like the music is being performed live.  Right in front of you.  You hear the nuances, the soft touches, the ends on the echo, the air in the ambiance, and the full texture.  Everything the artist meant for you to hear.

Listen to what some of the world’s most loved artists have to say about PonoMusic athttp://www.ponomusic.com/. Their own words, unscripted, are as powerful and emotional as their own music.  They describe how we take them back to the same feeling they had in the studio. This is a feeling that they’ve lost – that we’ve all lost – with the proliferation of lossy compressed digital formats such as mp3 – where everything became loud and flat and heartless. Yes, mp3s are really convenient, and sometimes, that’s OK.  But, if you want to hear all the music, if you want it to be really special, you have to start with all the music.

As Neil Young says, “it’s about the music, it’s the real music experience for the 21st century.  It feels good because it is good.”

You can press this sentence to go to the KickStarter! You can also press this sentence to go to the website itself!

It is now at almost $2 Million dollars in about 24 hours. Literally, over $1.9 Million as of this post!

What do you think? Will this be more popular than we can imagine? Or, will it be a disappointing product when released in October, just like the OUYA? Post in the comments below what you think about it!

Monster Hunter offically 10

It seems that exactly 10 years ago, Monster Hunter (the game where you hunt monsters) was released on the PS2 on March 11th 2004. Thanks to the success of that, it went on to the PSP. Afterwards, Nintendo bought exclusive rights to Monster Hunter. We got Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, onwards to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Monster Hunter 3 G in Japan) which released for the Wii U and 3DS. Don’t forget that next year, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will release in the West places sometime Early 2015.

Yes, Monster Hunter has been quite the successful series to release, and having the most recent main titles on Nintendo should give them quite a boost in sales for Nintendo.

Happy Birthday, Monster Hunter!

The Witcher 3 delayed to February 2015

You might have to wait quite some time for a game many think could have been one of the best games of 2014, as it will not release this year. Yes, The Witcher 3 has been delayed to February 2015 for the PC, PS4, and XBOX ONE.

Release Date of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – An Open Letter

Ever since we started working on the third installment in The Witcher franchise, it has been our aim to produce a title that would take our 11 years of experience in creating RPGS and distill them into a quintessence, into a game that would effectively crown those years. At the same time, we have wanted The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to expand creative boundaries, set new benchmarks, develop the genre as a whole. Ultimately, you, the players, must get an unforgettable adventure to experience in a vast, open world – and that’s most important. We’ve created a story that flows naturally, cinematically, rendered it in amazing sound and visuals, while preserving full freedom of choice – all for you. We knew this to be an ambitious plan, but believed we could achieve it by bringing together our team with its creative energies and current gaming platforms with their technical capabilities. A project this vast and complex would inevitably require special care in its final stages, manual fine-tuning of many details, thorough testing time and again.

We recently reexamined what we had achieved thus far, and faced a choice about the game’s final release date. The decision we made was difficult, thoroughly considered, and ultimately clear and obvious. We could have released the game towards the end of this year as we had initially planned. Yet we concluded that a few additional months will let us achieve the quality that will satisfy us, the quality gamers expect from us. Consequently, we have set the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for February 2015.

Dear gamers – we know many of you would have liked to play The Witcher 3 sooner, as soon as possible, even. We’re sorry to make you wait longer than you, or we, initially assumed you would. At the same time, we believe the game will prove to be worth the wait and meet the expectations you have of us. We believe The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be an exceptional RPG, one of the best, providing many hours of wonderful entertainment.

Dear shareholders – we are aware of the responsibility that rests with us and thank you for the trust you have granted us thus far. We firmly believe that quality – more than any other factor – determines a game’s success, and that the decision we have made is thus equally valid in business terms.

March 10th was Mario Day

It seems that our loveable plumber, Mario, has had adventures out the wazoo, he seems to deserve his own day, right?

Correct. Apparently, March 10th was Mario Day. This is legit, and full information is below:

In recognition of everyone’s favourite pizza-loving Nintendo character, take part in celebrating Mario Day. First appearing in Donkey Kong in 1981, Mario soon became not only the mascot for computer giant Nintendo, but also a worldwide sensation. The hugely successful Super Mario Bros. series, featuring Mario and his brother Luigi, defined the 1980’s and the 1990’s and Mario himself still remains one of the most adored, world-renowned computer heroes of all time.

So, gather your like-minded, Nintendo-loving friends, don your Mario t-shirts, order in some pizza and get those Nintendo games consoles, Gameboys and DS’s out for a whole day of Mario fun. You could even go one step further and host a Mario House Party! With plenty of ideas, games and activities to choose from, such as fancy dress parties and mushroom stomping competitions, you can be sure to make Mario Day a day to remember.

So, happy Mario Day then! Thanks for reading!
